The Milton Keynes Floor Mural: Large-Scale Expertise in Action
When a 3,000-square-metre floor becomes a canvas, precision, technical expertise and flawless execution are essential. For the Milton Keynes floor mural, Shier Coatings combined specialist flooring and spraying expertise with the creative vision of the London Mural Company and designer Yinka Ilori to deliver the UK’s largest floor mural.
Commissioned by Milton Keynes City Council, the mural was created from Yinka Ilori’s vibrant design, with patterns inspired by Nigerian wedding designs. Covering 3,000 square metres, it is currently the largest floor mural in the UK.
The project presented a significant challenge: how to apply a highly detailed, large-scale design across an extensive floor area while maintaining accuracy, consistency and vibrant colour throughout.
The solution was to bring together the specialist skills of the London Mural Company and Shier Coatings. The London Mural Company managed the setting out and production of the stencils, working with its artists and technical team to ensure every element aligned precisely with Yinka Ilori’s original design.
Shier Coatings approached the project as both a flooring and specialist spraying contractor. We prepared and applied the epoxy resin floor base colours before spraying the additional colours and design details through the stencils. This process allowed the intricate artwork to be transferred accurately onto the floor while achieving a durable, hard-wearing finish suitable for a large public space.
More than 6,000 litres of paint were used to complete the mural. The result is a bold and vibrant installation that can be appreciated from ground level, from the side and from above, including from the surrounding rooftops. The finished artwork creates a striking visual impact across the site and demonstrates what can be achieved when large-scale flooring expertise is combined with specialist mural production.
The project also attracted significant attention, with photographs of Yinka Ilori, the design process and the completed mural appearing across the site and in related coverage.
