Commercial Epoxy Workshop Flooring in Brixton, London

Shier Coatings completed the refurbishment of approximately 1,000m² of commercial workshop flooring at the Sirco Building in Brixton, London.

The building was being refurbished for an electric bicycle and scooter workshop serving London. The existing concrete floor was heavily worn and required full mechanical preparation, repairs and localised contamination treatment before the new industrial epoxy flooring system could be installed.

The Problem

Years of workshop use had left the existing concrete floor worn, damaged and contaminated in several areas.

The condition of the concrete meant that applying a new coating directly over the floor would not have produced a reliable or long-lasting result. The complete surface required mechanical preparation, while damaged and contaminated sections needed additional treatment.

The client required a brighter, cleaner and more professional workshop floor capable of withstanding heavy daily commercial use.

Our Flooring Specification

The refurbishment included:

- Clearing the complete workshop area

- STR mechanical preparation across approximately 1,000m²

- Spot repairs to damaged sections of concrete

- Additional preparation of contaminated areas

- Patch priming using an oil-tolerant epoxy primer

- Application of a 100% solids epoxy resin flooring system

- Installation of a uniform mid-grey industrial finish

Mechanical Floor Preparation

Correct surface preparation was essential to the performance of the new epoxy flooring system.

The complete workshop floor was mechanically prepared using an STR floor preparation machine. This removed weak surface material and created the necessary surface profile for the new epoxy resin system to bond securely to the existing concrete.

The prepared floor was then thoroughly cleaned before repairs and priming commenced.

Concrete Repairs and Contamination Treatment

Damaged areas of the concrete floor received localised repairs to create a sound and even surface.

Sections showing signs of contamination were given additional mechanical preparation before being patch-primed with an oil-tolerant epoxy primer.

Industrial concrete can retain oils and contaminants beneath the visible surface. Treating these areas individually helped reduce the risk of contamination affecting the bond or appearance of the new epoxy flooring system.

Mid-Grey 100% Solids Epoxy Flooring

Following the preparation, repairs and localised priming, a 100% solids epoxy resin flooring system was installed throughout the workshop.

A practical mid-grey finish was selected to provide a clean, professional appearance while remaining suitable for the demands of a busy commercial workshop.

The lighter and more uniform surface also helped brighten the working environment compared with the original worn concrete floor.

The Finished Result

The completed epoxy resin flooring system completely transformed the 1,000m² workshop.

The new floor provides:

- A durable surface suitable for heavy daily workshop use

- Improved protection for the existing concrete

- A clean and professional appearance

- A brighter working environment

- Easier cleaning and maintenance

- A seamless and uniform mid-grey finish

- Reliable adhesion across repaired and contaminated areas

This Brixton project demonstrates how thorough mechanical preparation, localised repairs and the correct primer can transform a heavily worn commercial floor into a clean, durable and practical working surface.
